Darth Frosty.....don't doubt your account of your friend being appointed (I'm assuming Elder) after being gone 4 months, because none of the things I'm finding out now make sense. Highly unusual situation.
In the past, what I was familiar with was a 2 or 3 year period (could even be longer) where the person "reaching out" for more cong. privileges was watched closely by the Elder body to determine his qualifications first for MS, before Elder could even be considered. 1 Tim 3:1-10 was the primary scriptual qualifications that were considered among others from the "Elder book".
Person had to be exemplary in conduct, family headship, meeting attendance, FS, commenting, personal study & bible reading and reputation. Prior to even being appointed MS the person was already doing other extra privileges in the cong. The person's thinking had to be 100% in line with WTS doctine, beliefs & policy.
If after time, an Elder thought a person would make a good MS, he was "nominated" to the other Elders for consideration. The biblical qualifications were considered one by one to see how the person stood up. Politics are highly involved. Sometimes "highly emotional" debate is used to swing the "vote" one way or the other. Sometimes Elders just give up or go along with a decision just to get it over with. If it is decided to appoint the person they move on to the next step.
The CO will be informed for his scrutiny. He should already know the person from previous visits and should already have an opinion. If by chance he doesn't know anything about the person, they are going to get closer scrutiny. Get the Elders on board to pitch the person to the CO and it's probably a done deal unless the person does or says "something dumb" during the CO visit. Pass the CO check and it's off to Brooklyn for the final say. (heard there was some kind of change on that now)
Going from MS to Elder is a whole different game as it involves more time, maturity, biblical knowledge and "be qualified to teach". First, as a MS they would progress to give the public talks in their cong. Depending on ability, the MS was invited to travel to other congs. to give the public talk. Ability in FS is considered. Has the person conducted any BS's? Does he conduct his family BS? If the MS passed all that criteria, you would go through the body of Elders, CO, Brooklyn, etc. steps again.
After all those hoops, the person was appointed Elder and the cong. informed.
Unless things have changed that much or there is such an extreme need for anybody to fill the Elder body.....I find it hard to believe it would be an easy thing to "fool the process" and be appointed in a short time or appointed with "less than noble motives". From the politics I have seen, I just think a person just going through the motions would raise suspicion.
If It was me......I would just either be honorable and try to do good for people within or just drop the whole idea.
If you have doubts now......being further on the inside is just going to expose you to more things that will raise doubts.
